Ginkgo biloba - art workshop for children

8/5/2020

Ginkgo biloba seeds from mother trees in Hiroshima, gifted to the Lord Provost in 2015, as part of the Mayors for Peace Project, have been nurtured by gardeners in the David Welch Winter Gardens within the Duthie Park in Aberdeen.
An opportunity arose in late 2019 for me as an ethnobotanical artist to create an artistic response in 2020 to these Ginkgo biloba plants through an artist residency and school and family art workshops in collaboration with the Park Rangers at the Duthie Park, culminating in an exhibition of the achieved artworks of both participants and artist in the foyer of the winter gardens.

Ginkgo leaf folding video in more recent post
This project began in February with a part-time residency to photograph and sketch the growing progress of the twelve trees in the gardens. By late March this became unworkable due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. Therefore, to continue the project through schools and families a different approach was needed. So, I created an info worksheet to be distributed by the Park Ranger team to schools in Aberdeen City close to the Duthie Park.
All going to plan the artworks created by the children will be exhibited in the Winter gardens in August when the Lord Provost will plant one of the trees at a location in the park.
If you are in the Aberdeen area and you would like to help your children to create an artwork using the pdf as reference it would be good to see your work. You can message me with the final image via my facebook page.
Many thanks and look forward to seeing the artworks. Fiona :-)
